Why does Grade 6 study Mali?

Because it corrects the context. Mali and Timbuktu show that Africa had large, wealthy, organised states with international trade long before European contact — Timbuktu had universities and libraries while most of Europe could not yet read.

What should my child remember about the explorers?

Why they sailed (spices and a direct route to the East), who reached the southern tip (Dias, 1488), who reached India (Da Gama, 1498), and what the consequences were for indigenous people.

Why are there questions about sources and bias?

Because that is the heart of the subject. A navigator's journal and a local inhabitant's account of the same event will differ, and a child must learn to ask who wrote a source and why.

Grade 6 history looks at the world for the first time. The year opens with the Kingdom of Mali — a West African empire built on gold and salt, with Timbuktu as a centre of books and scholarship long before any European contact.

Then come the European explorers, and here the curriculum asks for more than names and dates. The word 'discover' is used carefully, because a place cannot be discovered where people already live. It was new to Europe, not to the world.
