Grade 5 geography goes wider than Grade 4's. Where Grade 4 began with the child's own town, Grade 5 looks at the whole of South Africa: where the mountains and rivers lie, why the east coast is wet and the west coast dry, and what is mined underground.

The distinction that costs the most marks is the one between weather and climate. Weather is today; climate is the pattern over decades. A child who says 'the climate is hot today' has confused the two, and the paper tests exactly that difference.
