How does the Afrikaans past tense work?

Almost always with het plus ge- : ek het gespeel , sy het gewerk . The exceptions worth knowing are is which becomes was , and hê which becomes het gehad .

Why are there so many diminutive endings?

The ending depends on the last sound of the word: -ie after k and s, -pie after m, -jie after d and t, -tjie after l and r. It is learnt by repetition rather than by rule.

Are the explanations in Afrikaans or English?

In English. The learner's home language is English, and that is how a teacher would explain a second-language point. The Afrikaans itself stays simple and correct.

The most useful of them is the past tense, because it follows one reliable pattern: het plus ge- on the verb. Ek speel becomes ek het gespeel. Only a few verbs break the rule, and is becoming was is the main one.

Diminutives take more learning, because the ending changes with the final letter of the word: huisie, boompie, kindjie, balletjie.
