Why does my child get discount questions half right?

Because a discount takes two steps and only the first one feels like maths. Working out that 15% of R2 400 is R360 is step one; subtracting it to get R2 040 is step two. Many learners write R360 as the answer and stop.

How do I explain negative numbers?

Use a thermometer, not a rule. Once a learner sees that −8 °C rising by 5 degrees lands on −3 °C and not −13, the number line makes sense on its own.

What is the difference between the HCF and the LCM?

The highest common factor is the biggest number that divides into both; the lowest common multiple is the smallest number both divide into. One goes down, the other goes up — which is why they get confused.

Is Grade 6 the hardest year of primary school?

It is the year with the most new ideas at once: percentages, ratio, exponents, negative numbers and angles all arrive together. Grade 7 is a bigger jump in kind, but Grade 6 is a bigger jump in volume.
