Grade 7 multiplies large whole numbers in columns, uses the order of operations, and starts working with numbers in exponential form. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 7 multiplication is taught in Term 1. It comes up in the Grade 7 maths Term 1 test, and again in the final Term 4 exam, which covers all four terms.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Forgetting the zero placeholder on the second line of long multiplication, and gaps in the times tables — 7 × 8 and 6 × 7 cause most of the wrong answers.
