Grade 6 subtracts whole numbers of at least six digits in columns, and checks with addition or a calculator. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 6 subtraction is taught in Term 1. It is tested in the Grade 6 maths Term 1 test, the Term 2 (June) test, and the basics again in the final exam.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Taking the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column regardless of order (52 − 38 written as 26 instead of 14), and getting stuck when borrowing across a zero, as in 4 003 − 1 256.
