Grade 7 orders fractions to thousandths, adds and subtracts fractions where one denominator is not a multiple of the other, and multiplies fractions and mixed numbers. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 7 fractions are taught in Term 1. It comes up in the Grade 7 maths Term 1 test, and again in the final Term 4 exam, which covers all four terms.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Adding the denominators (¼ + ½ written as 2⁄6), and thinking a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction, so that ⅛ looks larger than ¼.
