Grade 6 compares two quantities of the same kind (ratio) and of different kinds (rate) in everyday problems, and uses scale to enlarge and reduce shapes. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 6 ratio and rate are taught with multiplication and division in Term 2, and return in problem solving in Term 4. It is tested in the Grade 6 maths Term 2 (June) test, and again in the final exam.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Writing the ratio the wrong way round, and sharing in the ratio 2 : 3 by simply halving the amount instead of splitting it into five equal parts.
