Grade 6 learners meet negative numbers in temperatures and on number lines, just before integers become a full topic in Grade 7. Negative numbers are not a formal topic in the Grade 6 teaching plan — integers start in Grade 7, Term 2 — but Grade 6 papers regularly ask them through temperatures and number lines.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Getting −3 − 5 = 2 instead of −8, and thinking −7 is bigger than −2 because 7 is bigger than 2.
