Grade 5 works with whole numbers up to six digits: place value, ordering and comparing, odd and even numbers, and rounding off to the nearest 5, 10, 100 and 1 000. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 5 place value is taught in Term 1. It is tested in the Grade 5 maths Term 1 test, the Term 2 (June) test, and the basics again in the final exam.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Reading the 3 in 3 405 as “three” instead of “three thousand”; leaving out the zeros in expanded notation; and rounding down when the deciding digit is a 5.
