Grade 5 learners meet tenths and hundredths written with a decimal comma and learn that 0,5 and a half are the same number. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, decimal fractions are formally taught in Grade 6, Term 3. Many Grade 5 classes meet tenths and hundredths alongside fractions in Term 3, so it is worth practising early.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Thinking 0,25 is bigger than 0,7 because 25 is bigger than 7, and multiplying by 10 by “adding a zero”, so that 2,5 × 10 becomes 2,50 instead of 25.
