Grade 4 subtracts whole numbers of at least four digits and checks the answer by adding back, because addition and subtraction undo each other. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 4 subtraction is taught in Term 1. It is tested in the Grade 4 maths Term 1 test, the Term 2 (June) test, and the basics again in the final exam.
