Grade 4 adds whole numbers of at least four digits, using estimation, building up and breaking down numbers, and a number line, and uses the fact that order does not matter when adding. In the Department of Basic Education’s teaching plan, Grade 4 addition is taught in Term 1. It is tested in the Grade 4 maths Term 1 test, the Term 2 (June) test, and the basics again in the final exam.
Every answer is marked as you go, with the working shown, so a wrong answer teaches something instead of only costing a mark. Not carrying a ten to the next column; writing the numbers so that units sit under tens; and forgetting to estimate first, so a wildly wrong answer goes unnoticed.
